Why Is Strictly Come Dancing So Popular?

It was recently announced that as a result of the BBC selling the format of Strictly Come Dancing to 38 different countries, it is now the most watched TV show. So why are so many countries desperate to sign up the rights to this TV show and why is it so popular with the viewing public?

Well let me first of all explain the format of the show for those people who have never watched the program. It’s basically a dance competition broadcast over several weeks where a bunch of celebrities get paired with professional dancers and compete to win the overall competition by performing different types of dances each week. They are judged by a panel of judges and also receive votes from the watching audience and the losing couple is eliminated each week until the grand final, when the winner is decided.

It doesn’t sound that great, but it is extremely addictive once you start watching and very entertaining. Of course dancing is the focal element but you will soon discover that you don’t need to be a dancing enthusiast in order to enjoy the show. There are so many additional elements for you to enjoy.

For example, there is the competition element which always creates drama and tension, plus there is all the glitz and glamour of the dresses, and the enjoyment of the music that the couples dance to. Plus there is also often a comedic element when the judges give their comments and scores. In fact it’s very easy to get a bit carried away and start shouting at the TV when you disagree with the judges comments. On the whole it’s a very enjoyable show. It’s basically family entertainment at it’s finest because it can be enjoyed by everyone whether you’re male, female, young or old.

Of course if you are interested in dancing, then you are sure to love the show anyway, but it’s also created a flurry of interest amongst non-dancers because all of a sudden dance clubs are seeing a surge in numbers. This is undoubtedly because of Strictly Come Dancing. It’s not surprising really because it’s hard not to watch great dance performances on the show without wishing you could dance like that yourself.

So to sum up I think the obvious reason why Strictly Come Dancing is so popular is because it is one of those rare TV programs that provides entertainment for the entire family, which is so rare nowadays.
