Using Locks To Secure Laptop Data

When it comes to computers and laptops, indeed almost any kind of security, one of the most important things to consider is security. But computer security comes in many forms. Most of us are wise enough to make sure that we install antivirus software, firewalls and spyware catchers to make sure that the data on our computers is reasonably safe. Perhaps some of the more security conscious of us take the time and trouble to make backups of our data and store these safely so that our vital information won’t be lost should the worst happen.

But installing software and making regular backups isn’t the whole story, and a surprising number of people overlook one of the easiest ways that someone can steal the data on your computer: they simply steal the computer itself.

Of course, in the home you may well have locks on your doors and windows, and an alarm system installed. But have you considered just how easy it is to pick up a laptop and walk off with it? They are one of the most regularly stolen items of technology, along with MP3 players and mobile phones, and for a very good reason. Laptops are relatively small, easily carried, easily wiped and easily sold. They represent a very good return for any would be thief.

Fortunately there are ways in which you can help to protect yourself, and keep your laptop safe. If you buy a good laptop lock, or cable lock, then these will deter all but the very determined thieves, and even then are likely to slow them down significantly. These locks work in a very simple way. If you examine the casing on your laptop carefully you will find a loop built in to the case itself. This is usually on a corner or edge, and may well be made of metal, or built with a metal core inside it.

A laptop lock is rather like a bicycle lock, in that it is a long, very strong metal cable that can be threaded through this loop on your laptop, and used to tie it to something that couldn’t easily be moved or removed. Drilling a hole in your desk, bolting a bracket to your wall or using some other means by which to attach your laptop securely is ideal.

This is particularly important in the workplace, where people often use laptops, and may often be called away to meetings, phone calls or for a chat with someone, leaving their laptop in their office. With many people walking about it can often prove very easy for a thief to pick up a laptop, drop it into a bag, and walk out with it. However, if the laptop is secured to the desk furniture or wall, then this is simply not possible.

These notebook locks can be bought with either a simple combination lock, or for increased security, a set of keys. However, if you do use a laptop lock, do make sure that you do not write down the combination number anywhere, and keep the keys with you, and not dropped into your top drawer, as this is the first place a thief will look.
