The Isle of Wight is the second smallest county in England It is an English island. The Island is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the United Kingdom, with around one million tourists visiting every year. Over 50percent of the Island has been designated an Area of Out standing Beauty with about half of the coastline named as Heritage Coast.

The Isle of Wight has no cities. Newport, is located in the centre of the island and is the second largest town The largest industry on the Isle of Wight is tourism, but the Island has a strong agricultural heritage, including dairy farming and sheep and the growing of arable crops.

The beautiful and historic town of Newport is situated in the centre of the Island and is its principal town, centre of commerce and most has the popular shopping centre. Cowes is the biggest town on the island, and the major port to the main land. Shanklyn and Sandown are situated in the south of the island. The village of Shanklyn itself is also very pretty with lots of tourist shops, craft shops and tea rooms.

Many events take place each year on the island The Isle of Wight Festival is a music festival which takes place annually and was originally held from 1968 to 1970, the venues being Ford Farm.

Cowes Week known as Skandia Cowes Week it is the longest-running regular regatta in the world. It started in 1826, the event is held on the Solent the water between southern England and the Isle of Wight, and is run by Cowes Combined Clubs in the small town of Cowes on the Isle of Wight.It is an annual sailing regatta which is held in August.

The Needles are a group of three jagged chalk rocks protruding out of the sea at Alum Bay, at the western most point of the island and at the end there is a light house. Alum Bay is also the spot where Marconi made his first radio transmission. The Needles proved to be a major hazard for ships that sailed up the Solent on their way to Portsmouth and Southampton, a lighthouse was built in 1786 on the cliffs above. The most photographed aspect of the Isle of Wight. The 80 foot light house was automated in 1994. This area of the island is notorious for ship wrecks and being a dangerous shipping area.
