Hydraulic motors are everywhere! Almost any type of mechanical equipment that utilizes fluids to power something or to move heavy objects will do so with the help of these workhorses. The technology used with hydraulics makes them invaluable in lifting cars using a truck lift, heavy-duty equipment such as road graders, and even wind turbines.
Hydraulic Motors
The typical motor we are all used to works by creating pressure on one side to drive the other. Hydraulic motors are similar, but operate by creating pressure on two sides instead of one. There are three basic main types. The simplest is a gear and vane style that is used in only the most basic or smallest situations. When the equipment requires a rotating drive at slow speeds, the axial plunger motor is the most commonly used. This motor will use a piston style axial plunger and is very common. When large amounts of fluid need to be moved at slow speeds, the radial plunger style of motor is utilized.
Valves
Control valves are an important element when it comes to hydraulics. These values require a high degree of precision and as a result, they often require hydraulic pump repair from an expert. Often times, these repairs can be very costly. There are many different types and styles of valves. Directional valves are used when fluid needs to be pumped to the correct actuator. If fluid needs to be controlled in a specific sequence, then sequence valves are called into practice, which are similar to a shuttle valve. Hydraulic motors operate under pressure. To keep this pressure under control for safety and efficiency reasons, special pressure reducing and relief valves are used. Also for safety reasons, various styles of check valves are used on different types of motors and systems.
The Hydraulic Pump
The hydraulic pump will move the fluid along the lines of the power system. Energy is gathered from an engine as a power source where this energy is then transferred to the balance of the system from a series of couplers. This where the advantage of hydraulics comes into play as they can have ten times the power of an equivalent electric motor. It’s important to keep the equipment in top shape to maintain this power advantage. If something fails along the line, a hydraulic pump repair specialist should be consulted.
When it comes to hydraulic pump repair, there are four main types. A gear style has low pressure, low output and lower efficiency where repairs are less expensive. Another type is the vane style, which has fluid to move faster, but doesn’t require high pressure to operate. There are two other types of hydraulic pump repair. The axial piston type can vary the ability of automatic pressure while the radial piston type is best for smaller applications under extreme pressure.
Hydraulic Basics
Hydraulic motors use fluid to cause a change, turn, lift, swing, or otherwise move an object in some manner. To accomplish this, liquid, called hydraulic fluid, passes through hydraulic motors, pumps, valves, hoses, and cylinders to condense molecules that create pressure to power the equipment. This pressure will then force the cylinder to move, powering whatever it may be connected to.
Hydraulic motors are powerful mechanical machines. Our everyday life would be impossible without them. The simple compression of fluid and moving through different parts of the equipment can move or lift many times that of an equivalent motor. This also makes hydraulic pump repair even that much more important. To keep any equipment working efficiently, you must have it maintained properly on a regular basis.
