It is a sad reality of today that we can no longer be safe, even in our own homes, without ensuring its security. My grandfather used to tell me how people in their time did not think much of locking or closing their doors, for they were perfectly secure in the knowledge that no one would harm or rob them. Today that is not the case anymore. People make it a habit to close or lock their doors and engage in the installation of security devices just to make sure they would not be victims of a crime, possibly of theft or robbery or trespassing.
This is truly an unfortunate reality, but we have to accept and act on nonetheless. For big buildings and establishments, like malls and schools, security is one of the topmost priorities. Everyday hundreds of people go into these buildings. A glitch in the security could mean the harm of a group of people. This is why, whether they are commercial or public, buildings and establishments have security devices installed all over their premises. One type of security device that is common with establishments is called the exit devices.
The term exit devices is not one that we commonly hear. In fact, many people do not know exactly what it is. Before I researched about what it exactly was, I even though it was some tunnel or compartment where people can exit. In actuality, exit devices are those installed in a door to keep it locked from the outside. It is called an exit device, because it allows you to go out of the building but not to enter it. Exit devices allow you to go out of the building even without unlocking the door or turning a knob.
Doors with this kind of device usually have no handles. Exit devices are also termed as the crash bar or the panic bar. Its term of being a crash bar refers to the process of opening this door form the inside. When you wish to exit, you merely have to apply bodily force upon it, or to crash it. It is also called a panic bar because it is very useful in emergencies that will require people to exit the building. Because it is hands free, people can easily use these doors as emergency exits, for instance in the case of fire.
Advantages of exit devices.
For regulation.
If you wish to regulate the number of people who go in and out of the building or to have them use only several of the designated doors in the building, exit devices are perfect installations to achieve this. Because it cannot be opened from the outside, no one can just enter the building without the knowledge of those inside it.
For emergency purposes.
These exit devices are hands free. This is especially advantageous for children and disabled persons. If a child needs to exit the building, there are no knobs to turn in order to open the door. People with disability can also easily exit without much trouble. With exit devices, there is easy access to exit especially in emergency situations.
We may not encounter the words exit devices often, and we may neglect to appreciate it most of the time, but exit devices are useful security measures.
