Contrary to Western astrology based on the months of the year, Chinese astrology is based on a 12 year lunar cycle. Depending on the year in which one is born according to the Chinese calendar, signs are determined on the basis of 12 animals.

Of the 12, Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig in that order, Chinese astrology explores compatibility among the signs.

Which of them make good partners, friends or lovers are found from the compatibility of the animal signs each one is attributed with.

Although each animal can have different characteristics, Chinese scholars and astrologers categorized four different groups of three animals each known to share identical thinking.
Very competitive and action oriented, the Mouse, Dragon and Monkey are complimentary to each other as they are all positive thinking.

While the Mouse is timid, the Dragon has courage. He can understand the intelligence of the Mouse and the Monkey’s cunningness. A Monkey wants to understand and needs the intelligence of the Mouse.

Ox, Snake and Cock are goal achievers. The three are clubbed under deep thinking animals. Cocks desire the Buffalo’s strength and the alertness of a Snake. But Buffalo’s also need to benefit from a Snake’s diplomatic skills.

Among the freedom loving animals are Tiger, Horse and Dog. Tiger likes and admires the Horse and its mobility as well as the Dog’s utmost loyalty to the master.
The Rabbit, Goat and Pig are peace loving sensitive animals requiring lots of love, sympathy and understanding.

None of them are super-intelligent or super-zealous.

Pig is regarded as an admirer of the Goat’s humility and rabbit’s craftiness.

According to the birth year, people can be identified with one of these 12 animals or the zodiac sign and their characteristics and compatibility are inferred from the sign according to Chinese astrology.

According to Chinese scholars in astrology, the identification with a likely animal or sign explains how some people gel instantly, make great partners, or, are put of by their presence and do not see eye to eye most of the time.

Among the least compatible signs are rat and Horse, Ox and Sheep, Tiger and Monkey, Rabbit and Rooster, Dragon and Dog, Snake and Pig.

Also according to Chinese tradition, masculine Yang and feminine Yin are natural qualities of everything in the universe. Together, balancing each other harmoniously, signs that fall in even years are Yang while those in odd years are Yin.
