In general, homeowners normally want to keep runaway water out of the home. The only time that water on the loose in the home is entirely welcome is in the event of a fire in the house. Sometimes a fire extinguisher will not be enough to put out the flames of a fire that has gotten out of control and can not be contained by a homeowner equipped with only an extinguisher. This is when it is necessary to call the fire department.
When ever you have a fire in your house, always call the fire department anyway. Even if you do manage to put out the flames, you will still want the fire department there to look at the damage to make sure that there is no possibility of it starting up again and to see if there has been any damage to wiring or appliances that could be hazardous.
When there is a big fire in the home and it requires water to get it put out, it can make a tremendous mess in itself. That will be of little consequence compared to your home and everything in it burning to the ground. This has been known to happen because there was not an adequate water supply to get the flames out.
Every homeowner needs to make sure that there is enough water on hand to extinguish a big fire if necessary. The water usually comes from a hydrant in close proximity to the house, but in rural areas there simply might not be one. Sometimes there will only be a volunteer fire department that can respond. If there are no hydrants and the volunteer fire department has a tanker fire trunk, then you need to know if there is a pond, stream, creek, or even a swimming pool that water can be pumped out of to put out a big fire.
Make sure you have plenty of water hose available to use to extinguish as much flame as you can yourself before the volunteer fire department arrives. Do not put yourself in danger by getting too close to the blaze or going back inside the home once the fire is raging out of control. Personal possessions are not worth risking your life for. As long as you, your family, and pets are safe, anything else can be replaced.
Having a sprinkler system installed in a rural home can be a great idea. This could help save the home because it wets down almost everything and can help prevent the fire from spreading. The one most important thing every home should always have and make sure they are working is smoke alarms. Smoke alarms are invaluable if a fire starts in your home. It will alert you as soon as there is enough smoke to set them off, which usually is not much smoke at all.
